Halfway through the season, and UnREAL is finally giving us some damn payoff.
Not that I didn’t enjoy the first four episodes of season three, but UnREAL seriously delivered this week, in Gestalt, an episode that both went big and went home. And featured Quinn in a ruinously amazing red power suit, so there’s that.

As the title suggests, and as another article I have written suggests, health & wellbeing has always been something I have struggled with. I am constantly bombarded, as we all are, with images that focus on body positivity and body negativity and weight and tone and appearance. Furthermore I have messages from friends, relatives and constant reminders on my social media feed regarding the need for a summer body, i.e. a tanned, muscular, slim-line, non-cellulite, trimmed, smooth body fit for a nice stroll on a beach. On the flip side there is a constant, and I mean CONSTANT, stream of images, videos, memes and the like reminding us that to have a winter body, i.e. fat, lazy, chicken nugget eating, hairy, bulky, pale, bumpy body fit for nothing other than single life, Netflix-ing and chilling by yourself, is something that no one should EVER strive for.

It’s a fine Sunday afternoon in my city of choice, I’m sipping watermelon-mint kombucha and wearing cat-eye sunglasses like the unacceptably awful motherfucker that I am, and it struck me that it’s been a while since we had a Carrie recap. Let’s change that and get back of the Kingwagon!
Spoiler: the gay kid doesn’t die at the end
A few weeks ago, I wrote a Riverdale recap that focused on the lead four (Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and Archie) and how their stories and arcs had been unfolding this season so far. But in doing that, I missed out on the chance to talk about my favorite arc of the show so far: Cheryl Blossom.
This is going to sound really strange, given how much I’ve loved a lot of this season of American Crime Story, but, with the season finale behind us, I think the last nine episodes have told a story that ended more a failure than a success.
What an odd episode.
Not that I totally mind odd episodes of TV – I am a die-hard fan of the oddest show on TV, Riverdale, after all (which I also recap on this blog, but like, you know, whatever). And UnREAL suits oddness – it’s a show that revels in the bizarre internal workings of reality TV, as last week reminded us, and that lends itself to some choices that would be seriously strange anywhere else on television. But let’s take a look at the oddness at work in this week’s outing, Confront.

If you can say one thing for Tomb Raider, at least Alicia Vikander got the worst performance of her career out of the way early.
“Of course he did,” Cheryl sighs when she finds out that her father had a secret will. There’s a lot of moments like that in this episode: of course Fred Andrews has always wanted to run for mayor. Of course Chic isn’t who he says he is. Of course Cheryl’s Not What He Seems long-lost uncle turns up at the family’s will-reading. Of course there’s a scene with an actual, honest-to-God blood pact. Of course.
