Carrie Recaps: Part Nine

It’s that time of the month again – no, not that one, where I manifest evil powers because I’m bleeding out my vag. It’s time for another Carrie recap! We left off last time with Sue setting up for the prom with her friends and discussing the fact that she encouraged her boyfriend, Tommy, to take Carrie to the prom with him.

Carrie Recaps: Part Eight

We’re back! And I have some recommendations for you, if you’re tuning in for another one of my internationally ignored Carrie recaps: first, Alias Grace, the new Netflix miniseries that was out last week, is one of the most bloody brilliant things I’ve ever seen and looks into the historical treatment of women in a just fascinating and moving fashion, which should be right up your street if you’re looking for something that handles women a little more consistently than this book. In the movie world, Joachim Trier’s new movie Thelma got it’s release this week, and the dreamy, violent, woman-centric coming-of-age story is extremely Carrie-esque but with less references to tits. So now you have your required reading for the week, let’s put on Wig in a Box and get into recap number eight!

Carrie Recaps: Part Seven

Sorry I missed a week there – I’ve been busy with some other very exciting projects, including launching my new film site, No But Listen, which I would love for you to go check out (hey, here’s even an article about Stephen King!). But without further ado, now that we’re only a day away from Halloween and hyped with Stranger Things fever, let’s take a look at Stephen King’s seminal classic, Carrie.

Carrie Recaps: Part Six

We’re back! And, in the time it took me to get to this recap, I finished Sleeping Beauties and was just thoroughly unimpressed and bored witless by the entire third act, so basically it falls into the category of “Every Stephen King Book Written After 2000”. What is it about SK books that just go on at least a hundred pages too long? Is it that, after a dozen or so brilliant books, editors were too nervous to go “er, Stephen, this is all well and good but what’s the bloody point of any of this nonsense?” and then they just sort of had to let it slide when he kept handing in this bloated corpse of a manuscript? Is he too much of a sacred cow to even edit any more? Sigh. But there’s still some hope for those written before the turn of the millennium, and with that convoluted and grumpy opening, let’s get back to Carrie!

Carrie Recaps: Part Five

So, for the first time in a long time, I’m actually reading a new Stephen King book. No, not this one – Sleeping Beauties, his collaboration with his son Owen King that was out last month. And I’m actually…quite liking it? It’s been a long time since I’ve read and actually made it all the way through a new SK novel (and I actively fucking¬†detested Mr Mercedes, the trope-ridden, punishingly uninteresting wreck of a “thriller” novel that it was), and I put it down to the fact that reading Carrie with this much of an eye to the writing style has reminded me how much I enjoy King’s writing style and I’m happy to indulge in it again. Anyway, on to another chapter!

Carrie Recaps: Part Four

It’s the first day of October, the month where – and this is true – every single day is Stephen King’s birthday. With Halloween fast approaching, what have you got planned for the year’s spooookiest holiday (aside from, of course, gathering round a campfire with your friend to read these recaps aloud to one another in reverently hushed tones by torchlight)? Give me your favourite scary movies, books, TV shows, and music. I live for this shit.

Carrie Recaps: Part Three

And we’re back (slightly late) – welcome to another recap of Stephen King’s Carrie. Have you guys been reading along? Oh, and speaking of reading Stephen King’s work, I just picked up his new novella Gwendy’s Button Box with Richard Chizmar; anyone read it? Is it worth a look, or should I just reread The Stand for the dozenth time instead?

Carrie Recaps: Part Two

First off, thank you so much to everyone who read the first recap last week and offered their support, comments, or interpretations and experiences with Carrie; it’s awesome to know that people are as excited about this as I am, and it’s been really informative to hear other people’s takes on the character of Carrie and the book in general. Without further ado, on with the next recap!

Carrie Recaps: Part One

So, a few things.

The housekeeping first: yes, I am recapping a new book and yes, I haven’t yet finished Fifty Shades Freed. But, as I’m sure you can tell from my last couple of recaps, my heart hasn’t really been in those awful books for a while. I really can’t overstate how depressing, boring, and truly terrible EL James’ books are and frankly, I need a little bit of a break before I get over the final hump. I will go back to them (hopefully by the start of 2018), but for now, I need something new, something that I don’t actively dread doing. If you want to catch up on my other Fifty Shades recaps, you can find them here. ¬†More importantly, let’s get on to the fun stuff: my new recapping adventure.
